Tankless Water Heaters 101

It’s summertime, which means it will be time for kids to head back to school in the blink of an eye. With August here, it’s time for everyone to start making plans and settling back into the familiar routine that most people enjoy for the rest of the year. Just because the kids are back in school doesn’t mean parents can’t continue their learning. For those who own homes, the job is continuous.

Keeping the home running smoothly and safely is a full-time job on its own. This year, make the job a little easier with some knowledge in honor of the back-to-school season. Here is a quick introduction to tankless water heaters and their benefits to answer some questions that homeowners may have.

What Are Tankless Water Heaters?

water heaterWith a conventional storage water heater, water is stored and heated in a large tank. As hot water is used, the tank refills, and the burner or heating element turns on to heat a new batch of water. However, these traditional water heaters have bulky tanks that waste energy and have several drawbacks.

Tankless water heaters are much smaller than storage water heaters because they only heat water when needed instead of having to keep a large water tank hot. This on-demand heating also makes them more energy efficient because they don’t have to waste any energy heating water when it isn’t needed.

How Does a Tankless Water Heater Work?

Tankless water heaters quickly heat water when there is a demand. When someone turns on the hot water tap or starts a load of laundry, powerful burners or heating elements heat water as it flows through the tankless water heating unit, which is why it doesn’t need a large hot water tank like a storage water heater.

The tankless water heater will continue heating water to a set point until demand stops, at which point the unit shuts off. A tankless water heater doesn’t rely on a storage tank that can run out of hot water like a traditional water heater, preventing the inconvenience of running out of hot water and having to take cold showers.

Reasons to Upgrade to a Tankless Water Heater

sickTankless water heaters offer many benefits, such as:

  • Space Savings: Tankless water heaters don’t have bulky tanks to store water. They are mounted on the wall and require much less space than storage water heaters.
  • Longer Life Expectancy: Tankless water heaters have a longer life expectancy than storage water heaters.
  • Unlimited Hot Water: Tankless water heaters will continue to produce hot water as long as necessary. This means no more cold showers for the last person in line for the bathroom.
  • Better Efficiency and Lower Bills: Tankless water heaters use less energy than storage water heaters because they only heat water when it’s needed, saving money on utility bills.
